Lodge
and Camping Tour: Day
1
Arrive Windhoek International Airport, where we will meet you and begin
the tour. Depending on the time of day, we may briefly introduce you to
the capital city. Your first night will be in the Auas Mountains on the
outskirts of Windhoek, beautiful views, fresh African air and a delicious
traditional dinner. Day
2
After an early breakfast we depart to the desolate South, drive for 3
hours and stop for a picnic with a view of the expanse of the Namib Desert,
from the viewpoint of a descending mountain pass. The area becomes rapidly
more desolate, and as we drive, the geological formations and fascinating
desert flora make themselves visible. We camp overnight
in the Tsauchab River, with a view of the Majestic Naukluft Mountains
on one side and the the magical Zarib Mountains, the base of and ancient
inland sea, on the other. Bird life, starry skies, camp fire…. Day
3
We travel up the sheer side of one of the Naukluft Mountains in a specially
designed Unimog 4 by 4 vehicle. The views are breathtaking, Hartmann’s
mountain zebra, and peculiar flora await us. The drive to the top is followed
by a leisurly walk down the Quiver Tree ravine. A permanent flow of water
and springs, huge boulders and a variety of interesting birds, plants
and animals are encountered along the way. After a 3-4 hour walk, we return
to the Tsauchab river camp for a hard-earned sundowner, with a view of
the magical setting sun. Day
4
An easy 100 kilometre drive and we arrive at Sesriem, the key to the beautiful
Sossusvlei and surrounding dunes and the Sesriem Canyon. After setting
up camp, we drive the 50km to enjoy the evening light of this barren dune
landscape. A photographers paradise, the Sossusvlei and Dead vlei are
awe inspiring. Our camp site is under a majestic Camelthorn(Acacia Erioloba)
tree with views of the desert and passing Springbok antelope. Day
5
Rostock Ritz lodge beckons in the distance. We drive in the direction
of Swakopmund. Desolate desert roads, we stop for coffee and fresh apple
pie at Solitaire and take a slow drive towards our destination taking
in the sands, mountains, Oryx, Sprinbok and clear African skies. Rostock
Ritz is a welcome luxury in this starkly beautiful desert. Day
6
The final leg of the South, we find ourselves travelling through the Kuiseb
Canyon and into the Namib-Naukluft park. We spend the day enjoying the
amazing desert fauna and flora, which is unique, close to the coast. Blutkoppe
granite inselberg, Ganab water-hole, Welwischias and the moon landscape.
We’re in cool misty Swakopmund before the shops close for you to
stock up on on supplies. Dinner with a view of the Atlantic Ocean and
a warm bed at a cosy Guesthouse. Day

Awake to the cool sea breeze blowing off the Atlantic Ocean. We’re
off on a boat cruise from the Walvis Bay harbour. Pelican Point, the lagoon,
seals, dolphins and a variety of sea birds. Picnic on board including
fresh Swakopmund oysters and champagne…. The afternoon is yours
to shop and discover the little wonders of Swakopmund, a small coastal
town with a strong German colonial history. For dinner it could be the
famous Brauhaus or possibly Chinese? Day
8
After the coolness of the Benguela current, we depart Swakopmund into
the desert along the Swakopmund river, driving into the “badlands”
of the Swakopmund canyon. A variety of endemic flora is encountered along
the way, including the tasty Nara bush, Lithops(mysterious stone plants),
the ancient Welwitschia, the Tsamas and other interesting species. The
river canyon extends for 40 kilometres of winding off road driving to
finally reach our picnic destination. Thereafter we’re off to Spitzkoppe,
a majestic solid Granite Inselberg, towering out of the surrounding desert
landscape. We set up camp and proceed to some photographic wonders in
the perfect evening light. Then it’s back to the camp for some mouthwatering
candlelight dinner! Day

We spend the day discovering the Spitzkoppe and surrounding Pontok mountains.
The Bushmans paradise, and ancient sanctuary in the hills, the rock arch
and ?. We may also climb up one of the granite mountains to discover a
beautiful view of the surrounding desert. The flora is also dramatically
different, as you proceed just a short way into the mountains. Lunch is
served at our camp site and we spend the second night at Spitzkoppe in
anticipation of the next days departure into Damaraland. Day
10
We depart after a delicious breakfast for Damaraland. We travel by gravel
road to Uis, an abandoned mining town, and stop off for a refreshing ice-cold
Rock Shandy. The hotel has been kept alive by passing travellers! The
looming Brandberg mountain beckons and after a picnic lunch, we depart
for our next camp site at the foot of the majestic Daures(burning mountain).
We may alternatively sleep on the banks of the ephemeral Ugab river, under
the shade of the Camel Thorn trees… We will then walk up one the
massive gorges that lead into this towering granite Inselberg and enjoy
a sundowner along the way. We return to camp to be treated to a traditional
Potjiekos. Day

An early morning walk up the Ugab River and a possibility of viewing Desert
adapted elephants awaits us. After breakfast we drive 130 km to Twyfelfontein
via Soris Soris, one of the earliest settlements of the Damara people.
Before lunch at twyfelfontein, we visit the “Organ Pipes”
and the Burnt Mountain”, two geological wonders from a time over
120 million years ago when South America started breaking away from the
Super Continent, Gondwana. In the late afternoon we visit the most famous
Rock Engravings sight in Africa. An open air museum of over 2000 engravings
as old as 10 000 years. After sunset we prepare for dinner and if were
lucky, impromptu traditional singing by the local staff. Day

After breakfast we proceed on a pleasant two hour walk on the Twyfelfontein
plateau, viewing all we have seen, from above. Then we drive 140 km towards
the Vingerklip Lodge, stopping to view another remnant of harsher geological
time, the Petrified Forest. Brought to their present resting place by
a flood over 280 million years ago. The countryside noticeably starts
changing to a grass and many larger Camelthorn and Leadwood trees. We
arrive for lunch at the Vingerklip Lodge, nestled in the Ugab Terraces,
the ancient riverbed of the now much smaller Ugab River. The afternoon
is spent walking in this beautiful area and viewing the amazing Sandstone
rock formations and the large variety of birds and trees. Day
13
After a beautiful sunrise and hearty breakfast, we depart 180
km for Etosha via Outjo, an old German colonial town/village with an interesting
museum, potraying a time of colonial conflict with the indigenous Herero
tribe…. After a visit to the museum and good coffee and cake at
Outjo bakery, we depart for the Etosha Pan, with all its interesting mammals,
especially the Lions and Elephants. After booking into our bungalows,
we immediately depart for an afternoon Game Drive visiting the Gemsbokvlakte
and a variety of other waterholes to view game. Over the two days we will
see Elephants, Rhinocerous, Giraffe, Zebras, blue Wildebeest, Oryx, Kudus,Red
hartebeest, Springbok, Black-faced Impalas(all antelope), Ostriches and
if were lucky, Lions, Cheetahs, Hyenaes and Leopards. On all previous
tours we have viewed Lions at fairly close range and are highly likely
to do this again. Sunset over the waterhole at Okakuejo is a breathtaking
experience. After and evening grill, there are a feast of animals to view
at the waterhole, where on previous occasions we have often seen Lions,
Elephants, Hyaenes and Rhinocerous as close as 10 metres away. Day
14
An early morning drive before breakfast will guarantee a large variety
of animals. Dawn is an active time as most animals are viewable at this
time before the heat of the day sets in. We return to camp for breakfast
and thereafter spend the rest of the day finding as many animals and birds
as possible. The vast expanse of the Pan is also something to see as are
the variety of birds, especially the birds of prey. We lunch at Halali
or Namutoni and return to Okakuejo just before sunset. Day
15
We depart 250 km to the Erongo Mountains, just East of Omaruru, to visit
one of the most beautiful settings for a Lodge, the Erongo Wilderness
Lodge. Set in the natural granite formations, a result of the Volcanic
period after the great continent Gondwanna started breaking apart over
120 million years ago, splitting Africa and South America. The area is
beautiful to walk, the variety of trees and birds and all the different
rock formations make this area a special part of our tour. Day
16
We drive the final 250 km to Duerstenbrook through the mountainous
central savannah of Namibia. We lunch in Okahandja and spend some time
visiting famous graves of fallen Namibian Herero chiefs and hear the story
of Namibias turbulent past in one of it’s historic towns which holds
many of the graves of Leaders of old. We may also spend some time visiting
the Kavango wood carvers to purchase gifts to take back home. Then to
a Guest Farm with Leopards running wild, well, almost…! One of the
early farms of Namibia, turned into a rustically lovely Guest Farm, this
is a great place to spend the final night in Namibia. The game drive includes
and amazing opportunity to view and photograph Leopards and Cheetah feeding,
free, in the wild of a very large fenced in area. After a traditional
farmhouse dinner, we head for bed! Day
17
An early morning game walk will prepare those legs for the flight
home! If time allows it, we will spend some time visiting Historic sights
and go shopping in Windhoek. Then we depart for the International Airport
and bid farewell to beautiful Namibia. |
